John Tyler Community College

John Tyler Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education located in Chester, Virginia. It is the fifth largest of the 23 community colleges in the Virginia Community College System.

The college was opened in 1967, and it was named after the tenth president of the United States, John Tyler. It offers quality and economical opportunities for students who want to earn a degree or certificate, wok towards transferring to a four-year college or university, switch careers, or train for their current job.

The college offers a variety of programs and services, with a focus on primarily serving and residents of cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell and Petersburg, as well as the counties of Amelia, Charles City, Chesterfield, Prince George, Dinwiddie, Surry and Sussex.

The school is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and it offers eight certificate programs, 17 associate degree programs, and 36 career studies certificate programs.

The institution serves 15,000 non-credit students and more than 1,000 companies and government agencies annually through the Community College Workforce Alliance.

John Tyler Community College has campuses in Chester and Midlothian and off-campus classrooms throughout the area.

It is the first college in the Virginia Community College System to be recognized for its sustainability efforts. The original campus was built in Chester, and it consists of five buildings, which house a learning resource center, technical laboratories and classrooms, computer labs, large student center, and traditional classrooms.

John Tyler Community College's program for unemployed workers is one of its most attractive offerings. The College offers those who are unemployed a variety of training opportunities through their "On-Ramp" program. This program provides tuition assistance while teaching its students new skills for a new career path. It also offers resources for career search, educates students on the most-in demand career fields, and helps the students devise a career plan.

John Tyler offers over 50 traditional certificates and associate's degrees in such programs as business, sciences, the arts, nursing and engineering.

The John Tyler financial aid foundation has a number of corporate and individual-funded scholarships, which are awarded to eligible students based on their areas of academic study. There are other forms of financial assistance at the college which include loans, grants and veterans benefits for those who qualify. The scholarships are offered each year to students who deserve recognition for their academic achievement, talent, and service. The number of scholarships that are offered by the John Tyler Community College Foundation are created exclusively for the College's students through donors' generous support of the College.

It creates a number of publications in order to help and guide the students through their academic careers. It also produces a number of publications each year to highlight the College's services and programs to the community, as well as educate the community about the College's work.
